From over 150 applications, I learned a lot about what candidates who say “I want to work in sales” should do and what they should certainly avoid.

How to work with sales: "Do" and "Don't"
From the bottom of your heart you say: – I want to work in sales!
People who want to work in sales need to understand some fundamental attitudes that a contractor looks for.
Knowing how to work with online sales, for example, can be different from working in field sales.

<![if !supportLists]>4. <![endif]>DO: Work on your LinkedIn. It's your public resume. I don't even ask for résumés from interested parties. Especially in the sales segment, your LinkedIn will tell the story of your career. If your numbers are good, you will show them. In sales, you use case studies and testimonials. Selling yourself is the same thing. You must receive ratings. Otherwise, run after some. Customers want to see this too. Get some from your colleagues right now! Do not wait.

They go in search of going beyond their limits. I'm going to pick someone in love who wants THIS job over someone who is slightly better on paper 99% of the time.
<![if !supportLists]>3. <![endif]>DO: Have a suitable profile picture . Image is clothing in the business world, displaying a smile or a friendly expression, no hats and sunglasses. Make yourself look like a fun person to talk to while being professional and trustworthy. Remember, you are likely to be initiating “cold” contact with people.

How to work in sales: what you MUST NOT do
Now let's go to the other side of the coin of working with sales, learning what not to do:
<![if !supportLists]>1. <![endif]>NO: Run. It seems that some people get confused when inserting the LinkedIn profile link. If I can't access your information, how can I hire you? Do it in your time.
<![if !supportLists]>2. <![endif]>NO: Be upset if I don't respond right away. I had a conference in London and spent the whole week traveling. One person found me on Instagram (which is an underrated channel) and when I didn't respond within 48 hours, she decided to tell me she wouldn't follow me anymore due to lack of responses. To say the least, I know I didn't miss a thing.
<![if !supportLists]>3. <![endif]>DON'T: Take it personally or, even worse, don't cut connections. It will be a difficult decision to make with so many good candidates applying. I can only hire one person. The same is true of many job hunts. That said, don't be upset if you aren't chosen or if you don't get a response from the hiring manager, etc.
The best you can do is go ahead and ask for feedback , and tell them that if they ever need anything, they shouldn't hesitate to come to you. This will show goodwill , which is a long-term asset.

Bonus: Special follow-up for our candidates who didn't get the job
I didn't know what to make of the candidates I turned down, but as a leader in the field, I couldn't just write a generic email saying, "Sorry, it wasn't this time."
So I posted a note on LinkedIn asking the community for help.
I know a lot of big companies that are hiring right now, so I had them name their companies and tell me what positions they were hiring.
This was the LinkedIn post:
"Hey guys. I have a great problem and I need help.
I have over 150 (good) applications for our Business Partnership Executive position at Sales Hacker, but I was only able to hire one person.
That means I'll need to pass up some great salespeople. As I can't do the hiring, I would like your help so they can find a home elsewhere.
So if you are hiring people for Inside Sales positions , please comment on your company name and what position you are offering. I intend to give them options to follow you.
I hope this works out as a mutual benefit!”
The next day, the post had over 70,000 views and over 100 comments from people announcing their companies and open positions.
A week later, there were 350,000 views and 218 comments.
On the day I wrote this text. Today there's even more!
I took these 200+ comments, filtered them by qualified companies, and had my virtual assistant put the company name, sales roles, locations, and LinkedIn profiles for the person who commented, all in a spreadsheet.
My follow-up email for candidates who didn't get the job will have many other options and the right people to contact.
I will continue to monitor to see if this will result in a hiring for any of them. It's something we do out of generosity and it's something that divides us, but I wish it wasn't like that.
I encourage other companies to do the same and pass it on. As CEO of a sales company, I'm the only one who can make this hire.
So if I can do this between holding a conference for 450 people in London and conducting the entire interview process in Europe, there's no reason why your organization couldn't either.
